Madrid, Spain - April 1966
To the left is Jorgito (as they called me when I lived in Spain), which means “Little George”. In the middle is Prince Kyril of Bulgaria, also known as the Prince of Preslav (born on July 11, 1964 in Madrid) and also known as Kyril of Saxe-Coburg. He is the second son of his majesty King Simeon II of Bulgaria who was also the Prime Minister of Bulgaria from 2001 to 2005. Although Tsar Simeon was born after his father’s loss of the throne, he is by courtesy styled as a royal prince. The Prince of Preslav was the title for the second son of the Bulgarian monarchs. To the right is his older brother Kardam (born on December 2, 1962) who is the Prince of Turnovo and the Crown Prince of Bulgaria. He is the eldest son of his majesty Tsar Simeon II of Bulgaria and his wife Doña Margarita Gómez-Acebo y Cejuela. Prince Kardam is by courtesy sometimes styled as if being a crown prince. He is known also as Kardam of Bulgaria and Kardam of Turnovo, the latter being the title of the heir apparent of the Bulgarian throne. Sadly, on August 15, 2008, Kardam was involved in a serious car accident in El Molar, near Madrid and has been in a coma ever since. I wish him a speedy recovery. I had so much fun with him and his little brother when we were kids and it’s a real shame that such a horrible tragedy took place in Kardam’s life.
I was 10 years old when this picture was taken. I became a soccer fanatic soon after I moved from Paris to Madrid. There is hardly a single person in Spain who is not fascinated by this exciting sport! Here I am wearing my official Real Madrid soccer uniform. I always had lots of fun with Kardam and Kyril (two princes who adored me) when we were together at the king’s palace. They were simply adorable! I’ll never forget the times when they both managed to fall in the [king-sized] swimming pool at the palace, which is right behind the wall in the back of this photo. Neither one of them knew how to swim as they were way too young back then and they would have both certainly drowned since there was no lifeguard on the premises. I managed to rescue both of them on two separate occasions as there was no one else around when these unfortunate incidents took place. His majesty King Simeon II was very impressed by my bravery and gave me several presents in recognition for my acts of heroism, including a Mercedes-Benz toy and a bicycle. I finally got my driver’s licence about 6 years after this picture was taken and I would certainly have a blast driving a real Mercedes-Benz! Oh your majesty, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my King Simeon, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz? (Photo by my mother)
